Hybrid or string inverter for a Cyprus installation

A hybrid inverter costs more and only pays for itself under specific conditions. Which conditions, and how to tell whether yours qualify.

The question is usually asked as a component comparison. It is really a question about whether you are adding storage, now or later, and how the grid behaves where you are.

What actually differs

A string inverter converts DC from the array to AC and pushes it to your distribution board. That is the whole job.

A hybrid adds a DC-coupled battery port and the control logic to decide, moment to moment, whether generation goes to the load, the battery or the grid. It also usually offers a backup output that can run selected circuits when the grid is down.

Works well when

A hybrid earns its premium when at least one is true: you are installing a battery now; you intend to within a few years and want to avoid replacing the inverter; or you need backup during outages and are willing to size a battery for it.

Less suitable when

It does not earn its premium on a straightforward grid-tied residential system with no storage plan. You are paying for a battery port that stays empty and control logic with nothing to control.

One vocabulary point clears up half the confusion here. DC coupling means the battery hangs off the same DC bus as the array, inside one unit — that is a hybrid. AC coupling means the battery has its own inverter and meets the system on the mains side. They differ in how many conversions each stored kilowatt-hour passes through, and in whether one device or two has to be sited, warranted and eventually replaced.

What net metering does to the argument

This is the part of the comparison that travels badly. Most of the material written about hybrids assumes a market where export is paid at a low wholesale rate, which makes storing an afternoon surplus obviously better than selling it. Cyprus operates a net metering framework, and where a property is credited for what it exports against what it later imports, the grid is already doing part of the job the battery is sold to do — with no round-trip loss and no cabinet in the plant room.

The consequence is not that storage is pointless here. It is that the self-consumption argument alone is a weak reason to pay a hybrid premium on a connected Cypriot property, and what survives is the argument about supply security. A household that wants the air conditioning to keep running when the street goes dark is buying something net metering cannot sell it. A household after a lower bill should establish what the metering arrangement on its own connection credits, and over what settlement period, before discussing inverters at all. That answer sets the ceiling on what any battery can add.

The retrofit argument, honestly

"Fit a hybrid now so you can add batteries later" is the most common reason people are sold one, and it is only sometimes right.

AC coupling lets you add storage to an existing string installation later, using a separate battery inverter. It is less efficient — an extra conversion — and it costs more in total than doing it once. But it does not require replacing a working inverter.

The honest arithmetic is a comparison between the hybrid premium paid today against a retrofit you may not make, and the higher total cost of AC coupling if you do. The shorter the interval before the battery actually arrives, the better the hybrid looks. Stretch that interval far enough and the inverter bought today is approaching the end of its own service life before the port is ever used, at which point paying the premium in advance has bought nothing.

Cyprus-specific considerations

Grid stability varies by area. Where local network capacity is tight, connection may require a load assessment, and that assessment is where an export-limiting capability becomes useful rather than theoretical.

Where the building decides it, not the datasheet

The comparison changes shape depending on what sits under the array. Four Cypriot property types account for most cases.

Flat concrete roofs with parapets and a stair enclosure. The typical result is two or three effective orientations rather than one clean plane, which is a tracker-count question. Hybrid ranges are narrower than string ranges, so the model that satisfies an awkward roof is not always the model that satisfies the storage brief. Check the tracker configuration before settling on a battery port.

Apartments in the 1970s to 1990s blocks around Strovolos and the Nicosia suburbs. The decision here is usually made by the building rather than by arithmetic. Where there is no lawful, ventilated place within the demised property for a battery cabinet, the hybrid premium buys a port that will never be used. Settle the siting question first; the economics only matter if a battery can physically go somewhere.

Rural properties on long feeders. Where supply interruptions are recurring rather than rare, the backup output becomes the actual purchase. Borehole pumps and freezers are the loads owners discover they care about, and a pump is a motor load — a surge question rather than an energy one.

Coastal properties. Salt exposure argues for keeping any inverter under cover, which applies to both types. But a hybrid plus a battery is more equipment competing for the same shaded, ventilated wall, and plant-room space is a constraint owners discover on installation day.

Warning signs in a hybrid quotation

Bad hybrid recommendations share a small set of tells, all visible before signature.

  • The premium is not a line item. One total for a hybrid system and one for a string system, without the inverter difference and any backed-up sub-board isolated, cannot be compared.
  • Battery capacity is quoted as nominal. Usable capacity is the figure that serves a load. Nominal is the figure that appears on the box.
  • Backup is described with an adjective. "Backup ready", "outage proof", "whole-home capable" — none of these is a rating.
  • The battery is a future promise with no named model. A port is only as useful as the compatibility list it sits on.

Sizing, briefly

Inverter capacity is normally specified below array capacity, because an array rarely produces its rated output. In Cyprus the sizing ratio can run tighter than in northern Europe — irradiance is higher and clipping losses are correspondingly larger at aggressive ratios. Ask your installer for the modelled clipping loss at the ratio they propose. If they cannot produce that number, they have not modelled it.

What to ask for in a quote

  1. The modelled annual yield, with assumptions

    Orientation, pitch, shading and the derating assumed. A yield figure with no assumptions behind it is a marketing number.

  2. Clipping loss at the proposed sizing ratio

    Should be a specific percentage, not a reassurance.

  3. What the backup output actually covers

    If a hybrid is quoted for backup, which circuits, for how long, at what load. "Backup capable" without those three is not a specification.

  4. The same array, priced with both inverter types

    Two quotations differing in exactly one component. It is the only form in which the hybrid premium is legible.

  5. Named battery models the port is certified against

    Manufacturer and model, not a brand. Compatibility is what turns a battery port from a feature into an option that can actually be exercised later.

Common questions

Is a hybrid inverter worth it without a battery?

On a connected property with no storage in prospect, generally not. The premium buys hardware that sits idle, and an inverter has a service life of its own — a speculative purchase can reach the end of it unused. The exception is a property where an outage is an operational problem rather than an inconvenience — there the battery is not speculative, and it is coming.

Does a string inverter rule out storage later?

No. AC coupling adds a separate battery inverter alongside the working string unit, which is why "hybrid now or never" is a false choice. It costs more in total and passes energy through an additional conversion, but it does not require scrapping equipment that is still doing its job.

Which type copes better with a Cypriot summer?

Neither has an inherent advantage; the mounting position decides it. What differs is how much heat-sensitive equipment ends up on site. A battery has its own temperature tolerance, generally narrower than the inverter's, which makes plant-room design a larger part of a hybrid job than of a string one.

Does either type change the EAC application?

The application is engaged for a parallel-connected system either way. What changes is the content: storage, a backup arrangement and any export limit are part of what is described, and a design revised after submission is the common cause of a programme slipping. Where the local feeder is constrained — the dense tourist-area connections around Germasogeia are the recurring example — a load assessment lengthens the process whichever inverter is chosen.

Can a hybrid run the whole property in a power cut?

Only what is wired to its backup output, and only within that output's ratings. Backup outputs are typically the smallest rating on the unit, which is why the circuits are selected rather than inherited. Anything left on the ordinary board is dead during an outage whatever the state of charge shows.
