Choosing an MPPT charge controller in Cyprus

How to specify an MPPT charge controller for a Cypriot off-grid system, what to verify about the company fitting it, and what an itemised quote contains.

A charge controller is selected on three numbers, not on a brand: the nominal voltage of the battery bank, the open-circuit voltage of the array at the lowest cell temperature the site will see, and the controller's rated output current against what the array can deliver. Everything else — display quality, app, badge on the box — is secondary to those three matching. A supplier who cannot produce all three from the quote has not designed the system.

What can actually be verified

Off-grid buying in Cyprus is dominated by claims that cannot be checked and datasheet figures that can. Sorting one from the other is most of the work.

Verifiable from documents: maximum PV input voltage, maximum array short-circuit current, rated battery charge current, nominal battery voltages supported, self-consumption, the temperature derating curve, the ingress protection rating of the enclosure, and the certification marks on the unit. All of these appear in a manufacturer's datasheet and all of them can be compared like for like across brands in an afternoon.

Verifiable about the company: the legal entity at the Registrar of Companies, whether the fixed electrical work is carried out by a registered electrical contractor, professional membership at ETEK where a design is being signed, and whether the firm has installations of a comparable size that can be visited.

Not verifiable, and worth discounting: peak efficiency figures quoted without a load point, "best" claims of any kind, and star ratings. This site does not publish reviews, ratings or testimonials for solar companies, because no dataset behind them would survive being checked. What appears here instead is registration status, coverage and the specification questions that separate a designed system from a parts list.

Registrations that matter

An off-grid system is still a fixed electrical installation inside a building, and in most cases it also carries a battery bank with a serious short-circuit capacity. Three things are worth confirming before money moves.

A registered electrical contractor is doing the AC work. The DC side of an off-grid system and the AC distribution it feeds are different competencies, and plenty of solar retailers hold the first without the second. Ask which named company issues the electrical certificate, and confirm that company exists at the Registrar of Companies.

A professional signature where the design needs one. Where a scheme requires an engineer's design or certification, ETEK membership is the check that the signature means something.

Insurance that covers the work being done. Public liability alone is not the same as cover for the installation itself, and a battery bank is not a low-risk item to have installed by an uninsured party.

Questions to ask

These are the questions that change the answer. A supplier who handles them in specifics is designing; one who handles them in reassurance is selling stock.

  1. What array voltage did you assume, and at what temperature?

    Open-circuit voltage rises as cell temperature falls, and the controller's maximum PV input voltage has to survive the coldest morning the site will see. Coastal Cyprus is forgiving here. A Troodos village site at altitude is not, and a string sized for Limassol can exceed the input limit inland on a winter morning.

  2. What is the controller's rated output current, and is the array over-panelled?

    Deliberately fitting more array than the controller can pass is legitimate and common, because it lifts winter and shoulder-season output. It is only legitimate if the manufacturer permits it and the quote states the limit being relied on.

  3. Does the controller communicate with the battery management system?

    Lithium banks want a controller talking to the BMS over CAN or RS485 rather than running a fixed voltage profile aimed at lead-acid. If the answer is a voltage table, the battery warranty terms are worth reading closely.

  4. Where is it mounted, and what is the ambient in August?

    Every controller derates above a stated ambient temperature. A unit in an unventilated plant room on a west wall is being specified for a condition its curve was not drawn for. Ask for the derated output at the actual mounting location, not the headline rating.

  5. What is the voltage drop from array to controller?

    Agricultural and rural sites run long DC cable routes. Cable sizing is a calculation, and it should appear as one in the quote rather than as a cable diameter with no working behind it.

  6. What happens in June when the battery is full by ten in the morning?

    Surplus on a standalone system has nowhere to go. Whether the system curtails, diverts to a water heater or runs a dump load is a design decision, and it is the difference between a system that stays useful in summer and one that idles.

  7. Who holds spares, and what is the turnaround on a replacement?

    Distance from the contractor base around Paphos already adds travel time to day rates at Polis Chrysochous, and it adds days to a fault call. A unit stocked on the island beats a marginally better unit that ships in.

What a good quote looks like

The test is whether a second installer could build the system from the document without asking a question.

Equipment itemised with model numbers. Modules by make, model, watt-peak and quantity. Controller by make, model, maximum PV input voltage and rated output current. Battery by usable kWh, chemistry and warranty basis. Inverter by continuous and surge rating. "Solar kit" as a line item is not a specification.

The design condition, written down. Daily consumption in kWh, days of autonomy, maximum depth of discharge, and the month the design is sized on. December is the design month for a Cypriot off-grid system, not the annual average — the array that carries a household in June will not carry it through a cloudy fortnight in January, and sizing on annual figures is the most common structural error in off-grid quotes.

Cable schedule and voltage drop calculations, DC and AC, with lengths.

Protection and isolation, listed: DC isolators, fusing appropriate to the battery bank's short-circuit capacity, earthing arrangement and surge protection.

Access and logistics acknowledged. Battery cabinets are heavy, and steep hillside access around Peyia limits the vehicle that can reach the door. A quote that has not asked about access has not priced the delivery.

Commissioning and handover deliverables, including who holds the monitoring account afterwards.

Standalone systems have their own recorded range, and it is the one to quote against. It sits well above the grid-tied figure for the same nameplate capacity, because the battery bank, the charge controller and a battery inverter are all inside it and there is no grid to absorb a bad sizing decision.

The grid-tied figure below is worth reading alongside it, not instead of it. It isolates the array side of the cost, which is the one component the two system types share, and a standalone quote whose PV element sits far below it deserves a question about module quality before the total is accepted.

Warning signs

A PWM unit described as MPPT. The cheap import market is full of them. The datasheet gives it away: a genuine maximum power point tracker states a maximum PV input voltage well above the battery voltage, because it converts. A PWM controller does not.

No temperature assumption anywhere in the document. If nobody has stated the cold-morning voltage case, nobody has checked it.

A claim that the residential grant applies. The recorded scheme is directed at grid-connected photovoltaic systems on a primary residence, with size limits and a means test, which places a standalone system outside it. Any claim otherwise should be traced to current text at the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry before it influences a decision.

Payment in full before delivery. Staged payment tied to delivery, installation and commissioning is the norm.

Ratings offered as evidence. There is no verifiable public rating dataset for solar contractors in Cyprus. Registrations, comparable installations and a specification that survives questioning are what remains.

Common questions

Is MPPT worth the premium over PWM here?

On anything beyond a small 12 V system, yes, and for a specific reason: MPPT lets the array run at a higher voltage than the battery, which shortens cable sizes over long runs and recovers meaningful output in winter and at the ends of the day. On a single panel trickle-charging a caravan battery, the premium is harder to justify.

How is controller size worked out?

Array power divided by battery bank voltage gives the approximate charge current the controller must pass, and the unit is chosen at or above that with the array's open-circuit voltage at the coldest expected cell temperature staying under the maximum PV input voltage. Both calculations should be visible in the quote.

Does an off-grid system need EAC involvement?

A genuinely standalone system that never connects to the network does not engage the connection application, which exists for systems that connect and export. A property that retains its supply is in different territory, and the arrangement should be documented before work starts.

Can a controller be added to an existing array later?

Adding capacity usually means either a larger controller or a second one on its own string, with both charging the same bank. Parallel controllers need to be configured so they do not fight one another over the charge profile, and the second route is only worth taking where the string layout justifies it.

How does the coast affect the specification?

Salt-laden air near the shoreline argues for a properly rated enclosure and stainless or galvanised fixings on the array. Inland sites trade that for dust and a wider temperature swing, which pushes the argument toward ventilation and mounting position for the controller itself.
