Solar panel efficiency options compared for Cypriot roofs
Module efficiency decides how many kWp fit on a Cypriot roof, not how much each kWp yields. What the datasheet lines mean here, and what to check in a quote.

Module efficiency settles one thing on a Cypriot roof: how many kWp fit into the area available. It does very little to the yield of each kWp, because two modules of the same rating in the same place produce close to the same energy per rated watt. Efficiency is therefore worth paying for where roof area is the binding constraint — and on the typical Cypriot flat roof it often is, with the slab already carrying a solar cylinder, a tank on a stand, condenser units and a stair head. Where area is not short, the datasheet line that moves annual yield in this climate is the temperature coefficient, and it is rarely the line being sold.
Systems are priced per kWp installed rather than per module, which is the first reason a higher-efficiency module does not automatically mean a dearer job.
The options
Polycrystalline. The blue multi-crystal modules that dominated Cypriot roofs a decade ago. Lowest efficiency still in circulation, so the most roof area per kWp, and a temperature coefficient at the unfavourable end. Occasionally quoted from old stock. No technical case on a new installation, and only sometimes a price case.
Monocrystalline PERC. The p-type workhorse behind most quotes written in Cyprus. Mature supply, predictable behaviour, the broadest choice of frame sizes. Its weakness in this climate is the Pmax temperature coefficient, the largest in magnitude of the current technologies — the parameter that bites hardest between June and September.
n-type TOPCon. The mainstream replacement for PERC. Higher efficiency at STC, a lower temperature coefficient, better first-year and annual degradation figures in most warranty documents, and better behaviour in diffuse light — which matters during the spring dust episodes rather than during clear summer weeks. Widely available at a narrow premium over PERC.
Heterojunction (HJT). The lowest temperature coefficient of the volume technologies, which is the most useful single property a module can have on a roof in the Nicosia plain in August, and efficiency at the top of the range. It sits at a genuine premium, and the list of installers here who have fitted it in quantity is short.
Bifacial glass-glass modules. A construction rather than a cell technology: rear glass replaces the polymer backsheet, and the cells collect light reflected onto the back of the module. Two separate benefits, usually conflated. The glass-glass laminate is more durable under UV and salt and normally carries a longer warranty term; the rear-side gain depends entirely on what lies under the array. On a pale membrane or light gravel with the array raised on a frame, that gain is real. On dark membrane with modules close to the deck it is close to nothing, and the module still weighs more.
Thin film (CdTe). Low efficiency per square metre, so among the most roof area per kWp of anything still quoted, with a mild temperature coefficient and good behaviour in high ambient heat. It appears on ground-mounted schemes where land is cheaper than modules, and it is the wrong answer on a roof where area is rationed.

Two columns carry the decision, and neither is the one people quote.
Area per kWp falls straight out of the definition. Efficiency is declared at STC — 1,000 W/m² at a 25 °C cell temperature — so a module rated at 20 per cent needs 5 m² of aperture per kWp and one at 22.5 per cent needs about 4.4 m². Add frames, clamp gaps, walkways and the parapet setback and the gross area is larger than either figure. On a roof with thirty usable square metres that difference is close to a kilowatt-peak, which is the difference between covering the afternoon cooling load and not.
Heat behaviour is the Cypriot column. STC is a laboratory condition, and a module clamped a hand's width above a flat roof in July runs far above 25 °C cell temperature for most of the productive day. Every degree above that reference costs output at the declared Pmax coefficient, so two modules with identical STC ratings and different coefficients diverge every summer afternoon — most widely inland, where Nicosia has the widest temperature range on the island. Ask for the coefficient in %/°C, and ask which cell-temperature model the quoted yield used. A yield figure calculated at STC is a laboratory number presented as a Cypriot one.
Which suits which property
Apartment blocks from the 1970s to the 1990s. Strovolos and the surrounding Nicosia suburbs hold a large stock of them, and their roofs are the hardest case in the country: shared ownership, a lift motor room mid-slab, one solar cylinder per flat, tank stands, and whatever the last contractor left behind. Usable area is the constraint, so the highest efficiency the budget reaches is justified, along with module-level electronics — optimisers or microinverters — because partial shade from a tank stand on a plain string inverter drags the whole string down.
Inland detached housing. Nicosia district has the widest temperature range on the island, and cooling load peaks exactly when array temperature does. This is where the temperature coefficient earns its premium, and where mounting matters as much as the module: a raised frame with airflow under the laminate runs cooler than a flush fixing on a tiled pitch.
Coastal exposure. Around Kato Paphos the air is salt-laden enough that galvanised and marine-grade fixings are the local standard, and that extends to the whole array. Ask for the IEC 61701 salt mist corrosion severity level the module has passed, the frame anodising thickness, and the alloy and grade of rails, clamps and fixings. Modules rarely fail from salt. Rails, clamps and earth bonds do, and a loose clamp under wind loading ends as a cracked laminate.
Hillside plots. Steep access roads in Peyia limit vehicle size on many plots, and current large-format modules are long enough on the long edge that a clear approach and two people are needed to place them. Where the final approach is a narrow lane and modules go up by hand, a smaller physical format at slightly lower efficiency can be the only deliverable version of the job. That belongs in the site survey rather than in the argument on the day.
Newer detached housing with spare roof. In Aradippou and comparable newer suburbs the roof is larger than the load needs, so area is not rationed. The question there is price per kWp installed for the whole system: a premium for efficiency that buys area nobody needs would return more in storage or in a larger array of mid-range modules.
Cost over ten years
The number that matters is euros per kWp installed, set against modelled kWh per kWp, what the array costs to keep clean, and what the warranty is worth.
Compare on installed price per kWp
Modules are one line in a system that also carries inverter, mounting, cabling, protection, labour and the connection application. A module premium of a few cents per watt is a small fraction of the installed figure.
Ask for modelled yield with its assumptions stated
Orientation, pitch, shading, soiling assumption and — the one usually missing — the cell temperature model behind the derating. Without those five, a kWh-per-kWp figure cannot be checked against a rival quote.
Read the degradation warranty as three numbers
First-year degradation, annual rate thereafter, and guaranteed remaining output at the end of the term. n-type modules generally state better figures than PERC on all three, and those numbers compound.
Put cleaning in the ten-year total
Soiling loss here is gradual enough to go unnoticed and large enough over a year to matter, and spring dust makes it seasonal. The recorded per-visit range sits in the solar maintenance price guide; put a realistic number of visits a year into the arithmetic.
Check the warranty can be enforced from Cyprus
Ask who administers a claim locally, what happens when the module is already on a roof, and whether the installer holds stock of the same model.
Run those five lines against the ranges in the solar installation price guide and the comparison frequently inverts: the higher-efficiency module often lands inside the same installed price band, because it needs fewer rails, fewer clamps, less cabling and less labour per kWp, and it carries the better degradation curve. The district price pages show whether a gap between two areas is real before a Nicosia rate is assumed to apply in Paphos. Whoever signs the electrical work and the connection application should appear on the register held by the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber, and the connection follows the Electricity Authority of Cyprus process rather than the installer's timetable.
Common questions
Is a higher-efficiency panel worth paying for in Cyprus?
It depends on whether roof area is the constraint. Where it is — a shared block roof, a small terrace, a slab broken up by services — the premium buys kWp that would otherwise be impossible, and that is the whole argument. Where the roof is larger than the load needs, the same money buys more generation as extra mid-range modules or as storage.
Does bifacial make sense on a Cypriot flat roof?
Only when the design earns it. Rear-side gain needs a reflective surface beneath and enough height and row spacing for light to reach the back of the laminate. A pale roof finish with the array on a raised frame produces a real gain; modules close to a dark membrane produce almost none. The glass-glass construction is a separate and more dependable benefit on coastal sites. Ask for the modelled gain with the albedo and mounting height it assumed, not a claim about the module.
Do panels lose output in the Cypriot summer?
Every module does. Output at Pmax falls as cell temperature rises above the 25 °C reference, at the rate the datasheet declares, so the July peak is not the peak of the generation curve on a hot inland roof. What separates a good installation from an average one is mounting that allows air under the laminate, an inverter out of direct afternoon sun, and a module chosen with the coefficient in mind.
How much output does dust and salt cost?
It varies too widely to state as a figure. What determines it is distance from the coast, proximity to unpaved ground or agricultural activity, array tilt, and how long since rain heavy enough to clean rather than to streak. A near-flat array collects more and sheds less than a tilted one. The practical answer is monitoring: per-string or per-module reporting shows the drift, and cleaning becomes a scheduled response rather than a guess.
Are polycrystalline modules still worth quoting?
Rarely. They need more roof area per kWp, derate harder in summer heat and carry weaker warranty terms, so the saving per watt is repaid in lost generation. Where a quote is unusually low, confirm the technology, the model number and the warranty term before comparing it with anything else.
