The hybrid inverter process in Cyprus, step by step

What a hybrid inverter installation in Cyprus involves, in order: specification, grant timing, the EAC connection application, and the handover pack.

The physical work on a hybrid installation is measured in days. The programme is measured in weeks, and nearly all of that sits in two places: the grid connection application to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, which typically runs to around 45 days, and the grant application, which has to be lodged before installation begins rather than after it finishes. Sequence those two correctly and the rest of the job runs to a predictable order.

Overview and timeline

A hybrid inverter is a grid-tied inverter with a DC-coupled battery port and the control logic to decide, moment to moment, whether generation goes to the load, to the battery or to the grid. Most units also offer a backup output that carries selected circuits when the grid drops. That second function is what turns a straightforward PV job into a project with a distribution-board redesign inside it.

The calendar breaks into three unequal pieces. Specification and quotation is owner-controlled. The connection application is authority-controlled and dominates the programme. Installation and commissioning is contractor-controlled and is the shortest of the three on a domestic system.

Two things extend the middle phase. The first is a load assessment, requested where local network capacity is constrained — the dense tourist-area feeders around Germasogeia are the standard example. The second is any change to the design after submission: a revised inverter model or a changed array size can send the application back to the start of its queue.

Before you start

Four things need to exist before an installer is asked to quote. Without them the quotes that come back are not comparable to one another.

Twelve months of consumption data. Annual kWh is the wrong number for sizing storage. What decides battery capacity is the evening and overnight load — the consumption that occurs when the array produces nothing. Two properties with identical annual totals, one loaded at night and one at midday, need completely different storage.

A stated objective. Self-consumption, backup, or both. These are different specifications. Self-consumption sizes the battery on the evening load and can accept a system that stops working during an outage. Backup requires a separate backed-up circuit board, a decision about which circuits are on it, and a battery sized to carry those circuits for a stated duration. Quoting one and delivering the other is the most common source of disappointment on handover day.

Ownership and consent. On a house, the title deed position. On an apartment, written consent from the management committee for roof and common areas, plus an agreed route for the DC cabling. This takes longer than the electrical work and is frequently started last.

A location for the equipment. Batteries and inverters both lose service life to heat. Nicosia has the widest temperature range on the island, and an unventilated west-facing store is the worst room in the house for lithium storage. On the coast, salt-laden air near Kato Paphos argues for a properly rated enclosure and marine-grade fixings rather than whatever is on the van. Hillside plots around Peyia have a separate problem: battery cabinets are heavy, and steep access roads limit the delivery vehicle that can reach the door.

The stages in order

  1. 1. Load profile and system specification

    The installer establishes daytime baseline, evening load and any backup scope, then sizes the array, the inverter and the battery against it. The output of this stage is a modelled annual yield with the orientation, pitch, shading and derating assumptions attached, plus a stated usable battery capacity — usable, not nominal.

  2. 2. Grant application, before anything is ordered

    The residential scheme is applied for before installation begins. Work that has already started is outside it. This is the one step in the sequence that cannot be recovered later.

  3. 3. Quotation and contract

    Itemised equipment with make and model numbers, the modelled yield, the backup scope circuit by circuit, the payment schedule, and who submits the connection application. If the contract does not name the party responsible for the EAC submission, that party turns out to be the owner.

  4. 4. EAC connection application

    Submitted by the installer before commissioning. Around 45 days is the typical duration, longer where a load assessment is required. Nothing on site should change after this goes in.

  5. 5. Mechanical installation

    Mounting rail, module fixing, DC cabling and containment, inverter and battery positioning. On a flat Cypriot roof this stage also involves not compromising the waterproofing membrane, which is a separate skill from mounting panels.

  6. 6. Electrical works and protection

    Earthing and bonding, DC isolation, AC isolation, surge protection, the backup changeover arrangement and the backed-up sub-board if one is specified. All labelling goes on at this stage, not later.

  7. 7. Commissioning and metering

    String tests, insulation resistance, inverter configuration, battery charge and discharge windows, export settings where an export limit applies, and the meter change. The system is not commissioned until the meter arrangement is in place.

  8. 8. Documentation handover

    Covered in its own section below, because it is the part most often reduced to a folder of brochures.

Where projects usually slip

The grant is applied for after work has started. The scheme is directed at grid-connected PV on a primary residence and is applied for in advance. An owner who lets an installer begin on the strength of "we will sort the paperwork afterwards" has given up the support.

The load assessment arrives late. Where the local feeder is constrained, the assessment is part of the connection process rather than an exception to it. Installers who work a district every week know which feeders trigger it; installers quoting outside their normal area often do not.

Backup scope was never written down. "Backup capable" is not a specification. Which circuits, for how long, at what load — three numbers. Without them the backed-up board gets designed on the day by whoever is holding the drill.

Battery delivery meets the access road. Cabinet weight and vehicle size are a planning question on hillside plots, and a crane or a manual carry adds cost that nobody quoted for.

Inverter position is revised on site. Moving the unit to a hotter wall to shorten a cable run costs generation every August afternoon, and derating in Cypriot summer conditions is a real loss rather than a datasheet footnote.

Apartment consent is treated as a formality. Management committees meet on their own schedule, not the installer's, and a written resolution covering both the roof area and the DC cable route through common parts is what the file needs — not a verbal nod from one committee member. Where the block has no active committee, the consent has to be assembled owner by owner, which is a timescale nobody prices into a quotation. Starting this in parallel with the specification stage, rather than after the equipment is ordered, is the whole of the fix.

What you sign off

The handover pack is the difference between an asset and a box on a wall. Five things belong in it.

The commissioning record. String open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current as measured, insulation resistance results, inverter firmware version, and the configured settings — charge and discharge windows, state-of-charge limits, export limit if one applies. Settings that are not recorded cannot be restored after a firmware update resets them.

The electrical certificate, issued by the registered electrical contractor who carried out the fixed wiring, covering the installation as built.

The as-built single line diagram and labelling schedule. The next electrician in the building needs to know where the DC isolators are without opening cupboards.

Warranty documentation, separated properly. Product warranty, performance warranty and workmanship warranty are three different instruments with three different durations, and battery warranties are usually stated in throughput or cycles as well as years. Whether the manufacturer honours the warranty directly or only through the installing company matters more here than the headline number.

Monitoring access in the owner's name. Portal accounts registered to the installer's own email are the single most common handover defect. Transferring the account later depends on a company that may no longer be trading.

A hybrid quote has two recorded reference points behind it, not one. The PV side prices per kWp installed; the storage side prices per kWh of installed capacity. Read them separately, because an installer who quotes a single lump sum for both is the one whose margin is hardest to see.

What sits outside both figures is the hybrid premium over a plain string inverter and the backed-up sub-board, if one is specified. Those two lines are worth asking every installer to price separately rather than folding into the system total.

Common questions

Does a hybrid inverter installation need a permit?

The connection side is the part that is always engaged: an application to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, submitted before commissioning. Whether anything further is required depends on the property and on what is being mounted — roof structures, ground-mounted arrays and works to listed or protected buildings are treated differently from panels on an existing pitched roof. The installer should state, in writing and before contract, which applications apply to this specific property.

How long does the connection application take?

Around 45 days is the typical duration recorded for a photovoltaic connection application. Where local network capacity is constrained and a load assessment is requested, it runs longer. The controllable variable is not the authority's queue, it is whether the design changes after submission.

Can a hybrid be added to an existing string installation?

Yes, by replacing the inverter, which means an existing working unit is retired early. The alternative is AC coupling, where a separate battery inverter is added alongside the existing string inverter. AC coupling carries an extra conversion stage and costs more in total, but leaves the working inverter in place. Whichever route is chosen, the connection arrangement changes and the EAC application is engaged again.

Does the residential grant cover the battery?

The scheme as recorded is directed at the installation of a grid-connected photovoltaic system on a primary residence, with system size limits and a means test. It does not describe itself as a storage scheme. The safe planning assumption is that battery cost is unsupported, with the current scheme text checked against the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry before any commitment is made.

What happens to the system during a power cut?

Without a backup output configured, nothing — grid-tied inverters disconnect when the grid drops, which is a safety requirement rather than a fault. With a backup output, the backed-up circuits are carried by the battery for as long as its state of charge and the connected load allow. Anything not on the backed-up board stays dead regardless of how full the battery is.

What maintenance does the system need afterwards?

Output monitoring is the real maintenance task, because a failed string or a degrading battery shows up in the data long before anyone notices it in a bill. Cleaning frequency depends on exposure: coastal roofs collect salt faster, inland sites collect dust after the spring winds. Firmware updates also need an owner, and that responsibility should be named at handover.
