How long a hybrid inverter installation takes in Cyprus
Fitting a hybrid inverter in Cyprus is a short electrical job inside a much longer connection programme. Where the time goes, and what extends each stage.

The physical work of fitting a hybrid inverter is short. Mounting the unit, running the DC and AC cabling, terminating the battery, setting the protection parameters and proving the backup changeover is skilled electrical work measured in days, not weeks. The programme around it is not short, because a hybrid inverter is a generating device and a storage device at once, and both sides engage the Electricity Authority of Cyprus. Around 45 days is the typical duration of a clean connection application, and that is the item that sets the calendar.
A hybrid installation is therefore scheduled backwards from the connection date, not forwards from the day the equipment lands. A quotation naming a start date but no submission date has the sequence the wrong way round.
Typical duration
Five stages, and only one of them involves a van outside the property.
Load profile before hardware. A hybrid inverter is specified by four independent ratings — PV input, continuous AC output, battery port power and backup output — and the backup rating is almost always the smallest. Deciding which circuits stay live during an outage governs everything downstream, and it cannot be settled from a roof survey. Where nobody has listed the essential loads, this stage takes longer than the installation.
Equipment selection and the DC bus decision. Low-voltage 48 V nominal batteries and stacked high-voltage architectures are not interchangeable, and the inverter choice locks the battery choice with it. Getting this wrong is not recoverable by swapping a component later.
The connection application. Submitted before commissioning, normally by the installer. Around 45 days on an unconstrained feeder. A hybrid unit and an AC-coupled battery inverter added alongside an existing string inverter are both new generating devices on the same connection, so a retrofit engages the process as much as a new build does.
Installation. The electrical work itself, plus mounting and cable routing. Certified electrical labour runs to roughly EUR 32 to 65 per hour before materials, and the hours are driven by cable distance and wall construction rather than by the inverter model.
Commissioning and metering. Protection settings configured and recorded, backup changeover proved under load, monitoring registered, meter changed by the authority. A system with the battery connected but the changeover untested is not commissioned; it is installed.
What extends it
An undefined essential-loads list. The most common cause of a stalled hybrid project. Air conditioning, a borehole pump or an immersion heater on the backup side changes the inverter rating, which changes the equipment, which changes the submitted application.
Battery position. In the 1970s to 1990s apartment blocks that dominate Strovolos and the surrounding Nicosia suburbs there is frequently no compliant internal position offering the ventilation, clearance and fire separation a lithium battery needs, and the shared riser limits the cable route to the roof. The answer is often a location nobody had in mind at quotation stage.
Thermal siting. Inverters and batteries both derate in heat. Nicosia has the widest temperature range on the island, and an unventilated west-facing store is the worst room in the building for power electronics. Discovering that after the unit is mounted means moving it.
Coastal enclosure requirements. On directly exposed sites — Kato Paphos is the reference case — salt-laden air means a properly rated enclosure and marine-grade fixings, and substituting them late is a re-order rather than an adjustment.
Design change after submission. A different inverter model, a changed array size or a moved point of connection alters what the authority assessed. Holding the design still after the file goes in is the largest single lever on the timetable.
Standards that cannot be evidenced. Generating plant on a low-voltage distribution network is assessed against EN 50549-1, inverter safety sits under IEC 62109, and industrial lithium cells under IEC 62619. A quotation naming make and model can be checked against those in an afternoon.
Lead times on materials
The inverter is the item that moves the date, and the determinant is stock position rather than manufacturing. Common residential string inverters are generally held on the island. Hybrid units, three-phase hybrids above domestic ratings and any inverter tied to a specific battery architecture are frequently ordered in, and the wait is set by the importer's next container. Whether the named model is physically in stock in Cyprus is worth putting in writing before signing.
Batteries carry a constraint that panels do not. Lithium-ion batteries move as UN 3480, Class 9 dangerous goods, with a UN 38.3 test summary accompanying the consignment. That restricts how they are shipped and how quickly a substitution can be arranged if the ordered capacity is unavailable. A late change of battery brand is not a like-for-like swap; it is a new consignment on a new schedule, and where the DC bus voltage differs it is a new inverter as well.
Two further items sit outside the installer's control. The meter change is the authority's and follows connection approval. Where the property needs a supply upgrade to accommodate the AC output, the connection works are the authority's too, priced per property.
Installed storage sits at roughly EUR 480 to 850 per kWh of capacity, median EUR 620, installed and commissioned. Grid-tied PV alongside it runs at roughly EUR 900 to 1,300 per kWp. Those are the two figures a hybrid quotation should separate rather than merge.
Sequencing with other trades
Array design before inverter order, not after. The DC to AC ratio on Cyprus roofs normally sits around 1.1 to 1.3. A flat roof with parapets and a stair enclosure often ends up as two or three orientations, each needing its own tracker, and tracker count is an inverter selection criterion. Ordering the inverter before the array layout is fixed inverts the dependency.
Electrical distribution work before the inverter arrives. The essential-loads board, the earthing arrangement and the cable route are what turn a short fit into a long one. Surveying the existing board at quotation stage is the cheapest hour in the project. This site lists storage and hybrid inverter installers by district, and registration is the item to check rather than the size of a company's fleet.
Builder or plasterer after the cable route is set. Chasing walls and making good is trivial when it happens once. Where a decorator has finished before the DC route is agreed, it happens twice.
Roofing before mounting. Fixing an array to a covering with a few years left in it means removing and refitting it later, at full labour cost both times.
Retrofits around existing generation. Adding storage to an approved system changes the installation the authority assessed, so the sequence starts with the application, not with the battery delivery. Where the local feeder is constrained, that lead time is longer again, and a contractor working the district every week is the one who knows which feeders behave that way.
Common questions
How much of the total programme is actually on site?
A small fraction. The electrical work is days; the application, the equipment order and the metering step are weeks each. A programme presented as a single installation date is describing the visible part and omitting the parts that determine when the system produces anything.
Can the battery be added later to a hybrid inverter fitted now?
Yes, and it is a legitimate way to stage a budget, provided the inverter's battery port, DC bus voltage and firmware support the intended pack. The point to settle at the outset is which battery family the unit is committed to, because that decision is made when the inverter is bought whether anyone acknowledges it or not.
Does adding storage to an existing system need a new application?
Any change to the point of connection, the inverter or the export arrangement re-engages the process. A DC-coupled retrofit that replaces the inverter clearly does. An AC-coupled battery inverter alongside an existing string inverter is still a new generating device on the same connection. The safe planning assumption is that the application is engaged again.
What does commissioning have to produce in writing?
The as-configured grid protection settings, the battery serial numbers and capacity, the essential-loads schedule, and a monitoring account registered to the owner's own email address rather than the installer's. Accounts left in an installer's name are the most common handover defect on the island, and transferring one later depends on a company that may no longer be trading.
Are installers on this site ranked on installation speed?
No. Companies are listed with registrations, coverage and stated technical capability. Installation duration is not published data anywhere, and there are no reviews, ratings or testimonials here to derive it from.
