A grid connection in Nicosia is two bills, not one. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus sets its own connection and metering charges, and no contractor can discount them. What local companies quote for is the work either side of that: the AC installation, the earthing and protection, the certification, and the handling of the application itself. Certified electrician labour in the Nicosia district runs €32 to €65 per hour, and the spread within that range says more about the building than about the firm.
Local market summary
Nicosia is the largest district by population and the only one of the five that is entirely inland. That shapes the connection market in three ways.
First, the work is dominated by retrofit rather than new build. A large share of the housing stock in Strovolos and the surrounding suburbs dates from the 1970s to the 1990s, and on those properties a solar connection is rarely a clean addition — it lands on an installation that was designed for a different load and often needs consumer unit replacement, earthing upgrade and a meter position that meets current requirements before the Authority will energise anything.
Second, the district carries most of the island's institutional and light industrial load, which means three-phase work is routine here in a way it is not in the coastal residential districts. Contractors in Nicosia are generally more comfortable with three-phase metering, export limiting and load assessment than firms whose bread and butter is single-phase villas.
Third, there is no salt. Coastal districts carry a corrosion premium on enclosures, glands and fixings; Nicosia does not. What it carries instead is dust off the plain and the widest temperature range on the island, and both of those show up in specification rather than in the connection fee.
What it costs here
The connection charge itself is the Authority's, published by it and regulated by the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority. What determines it is the supply type requested — single or three phase — the capacity applied for, whether the meter position has to move, and whether the local low-voltage network needs any reinforcement to accept the export. Two houses on the same street can receive different figures for the last reason alone, and no installer can tell in advance which one a property will be.
Contractor labour is the part that can be compared like for like.
For the whole job rather than the hourly rate, a grid-tied residential PV installation in Cyprus runs €900 to €1,300 per kWp installed, with the AC side and the connection paperwork inside that figure on most quotes. Three-phase commercial rooftop work in the 50 to 250 kWp band prices lower per unit, at €700 to €1,050 per kWp, because the balance-of-system cost is spread across more capacity.
Local conditions that change the job
Apartment blocks in Strovolos, Lakatamia and Aglantzia
Meter cupboards sit in shared stairwells, roofs are common property, and the cable route from roof to meter passes through space that belongs to everyone. The management committee decision usually takes longer than the electrical work, and an installer who has not asked about it has not started the job.
Original 1970s and 1980s installations
Older Nicosia properties frequently need earthing brought to current standards before certification is possible. Where a full rewire is already overdue, doing both at once costs less than doing them a year apart.
Detached housing in Latsia, Geri, Tseri and Dali
Newer stock on the southern and eastern edge of the district has its own meter position, usable roof area and more frequent access to three phase. These are the most predictable connections in the district.
The southern half of the walled city and other conservation areas
Inside the Venetian walls, on the Republic-administered side, narrow lanes limit vehicle and platform access, and facades in protected areas restrict where cable and conduit can run. Both add hours rather than materials, which is why hourly rate matters more here than elsewhere.
Agricultural connections around Kokkinotrimithia and the plain
Long service runs from the nearest transformer, borehole pumping loads that peak in daylight, and a load profile that suits export limiting rather than maximum capacity. These are assessed differently and quoted differently.
Season matters too. Inland summer temperatures put inverter placement under real pressure: a unit on an unshaded west wall in Nicosia in August is working at the edge of its temperature envelope, and derating costs generation exactly when generation peaks. Roof and outdoor work here shifts to early morning through July and August, which lengthens programmes without changing the day rate.
Dust is the other inland variable. Coastal arrays lose output to salt film; Nicosia arrays lose it to airborne dust off the plain, which builds through the dry months and clears only partially in the first rain. The connection is unaffected either way, but the modelled yield is not, and a quote that assumes a clean array all year has overstated what the system will return. Soiling losses belong in the same conversation as the connection, because both are decided before anything is fixed to the roof.
One point applies across all of the above. A connection application is not permission to generate as much as the roof can carry: it records a supply type, an installed capacity and, where the local network requires it, an export limit that the inverter must be configured to respect. Commissioning is the point at which those settings are verified, and the commissioning record is what proves the installation matches what was approved. Owners who later add capacity, or change inverters, are changing the thing that was authorised.
Companies covering the area
Anything that will be connected to the supply has to be installed and certified by a licensed electrical contractor — that certificate is what stands behind energising a new or altered installation. For larger three-phase systems, the design itself is normally the work of an engineer registered with the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber.
Four things are worth confirming before a quote is accepted: the licence number and the category it covers, whether the firm has handled connection applications of the same supply type recently, whether the modelled yield came with its assumptions attached, and what the quote excludes. Our electrical listings and the Nicosia district pages record registrations, coverage and time trading for each company below.

Common questions
Who submits the application to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus?
In practice the installer prepares and submits it on the owner's behalf, because it requires the installation details and the contractor's certification. The account, and the liability for the connection charges, remain the owner's.
Do you publish reviews or ratings for electricians in Nicosia?
No. Companies are ordered on what a document can prove — registration, licence category, insurance and years trading — and the weighting is published on our methodology page.
Does a Nicosia property need a three-phase supply for solar?
Not for a typical domestic array. Three phase becomes relevant above the single-phase capacity limit, where existing loads are already three phase, or where a commercial or agricultural connection is involved. Converting an existing single-phase supply is an Authority process with its own charge, and it is worth pricing before the array is sized rather than after.
How long does the connection take?
What determines it is the completeness of the submission, the supply type, and whether any network reinforcement is needed at the property. Applications that stall are usually stalled on a missing certificate or an unresolved meter position, not on the Authority's queue.
Does adding a battery change the application?
Yes. Storage is a change to the installation rather than an accessory, so it belongs in the application and in the commissioning record. Retrofitting it after the connection is energised means going back through the process.
Is the hourly rate the number to compare?
Only alongside the scope. A firm quoting at the lower end of the Nicosia range and a firm at the upper end can produce identical final invoices if one has counted the earthing upgrade and the other has not. Three quotes against one written scope is the comparison that means something.
