Every grid-connected photovoltaic system in the Republic of Cyprus needs a connection application to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, lodged before the system is commissioned rather than after it is switched on. Around 45 days is the typical duration, the installer normally submits it, and the two things that extend it are a load assessment where the local feeder is constrained and any design change made after submission. Nearly every other question about EAC connection resolves into three variables: the supply the property already has, whether the local network has headroom, and whether the paperwork and the installed hardware still describe the same system.

Short answers

Yes, always. Anything that can push current back into the distribution network is a generating installation, and the connection arrangement is a matter for the Electricity Authority of Cyprus regardless of array size. Planning and building permissions are a separate track; satisfying one says nothing about the other.

The installer, if the contract names them. In practice most installers submit on the owner's behalf. Where the contract is silent, the responsibility defaults to the owner, and that is discovered several weeks into a programme that nobody has started. The submitting party belongs in the written quotation.

Around 45 days is the typical duration for a photovoltaic connection application. That figure describes a clean submission on an unconstrained feeder. It is not a service guarantee and it is not the outer bound.

Constrained local network capacity triggers a load assessment. The dense tourist-area connections around Germasogeia are the standard example: enough export applications on one feeder, and the authority looks at the aggregate rather than at the individual system. Agricultural connections on the Nicosia plain behave differently again, with pumping loads that dominate the profile.

Three-phase is a property question, not a solar question. Cypriot low-voltage supply is 230 V single-phase and 400 V three-phase at 50 Hz. Domestic properties are commonly single-phase; larger houses, agricultural holdings and anything commercial are usually three-phase already. Upgrading a supply purely to fit a larger array is rarely the economic answer once the connection works are priced.

System size is assessed against the supply and the network, not against the roof. The available roof area is the last constraint anyone should be sizing to. What matters is the existing supply capacity, the declared load and, on a constrained feeder, the aggregate export the network can absorb.

The metering arrangement changes. Net metering requires a meter capable of recording import and export separately. The meter change is part of the connection process, and until it is done the system is not commissioned in any meaningful sense — whatever the inverter display says.

No, commissioning waits. Energising a generating installation before the connection arrangement is in place is not a paperwork shortcut; it is an unapproved connection, and unwinding it costs more than waiting.

A design change can send the application back to the start. A different inverter model, a changed array size, a moved point of connection — any of these alter what was submitted. The controllable variable in the whole programme is not the authority's queue, it is design discipline after the file goes in.

Cost splits into three parts. Certified electrical labour runs to roughly EUR 32-65 per hour before materials. The PV installation baseline sits at roughly EUR 900-1,300 per kWp installed for grid-tied residential work. Authority charges for the connection and the meter are set separately and depend on the supply being connected; they are quoted per property rather than estimated from a table.

Where the answer depends

Four property-level facts move every answer above, and they are worth establishing before an installer is asked to quote rather than after.

The existing supply. Single-phase at 230 V or three-phase at 400 V, and the declared capacity of that supply. This determines inverter selection, whether a three-phase inverter or three single-phase units make sense, and whether the export arrangement needs phase balancing. It is printed on the supply agreement and takes one phone call to confirm.

The feeder. Local network headroom is invisible from the roof and decisive for the programme. Installers who work a district every week know which feeders attract a load assessment; a company quoting outside its normal area often does not, and the programme in its quotation reflects that ignorance rather than any malice.

The tenure. On a freestanding house, the title position. On an apartment block, written consent from the management committee for the roof, the common areas and the DC cable route. Committees meet on their own schedule, and this is consistently the item started last and finished slowest.

The equipment location. Inverters derate in heat. Nicosia has the widest temperature range on the island, and an unventilated west-facing store is the worst room in the building for power electronics. On exposed coastal sites, salt-laden air argues for a properly rated enclosure and marine-grade fixings. Neither is a connection requirement, but both change what the system delivers against the yield that was modelled.

What nobody asks but should

Which standards the equipment is certified to. For generating plant connected to a low-voltage distribution network the relevant standard is EN 50549-1; inverter safety sits under IEC 62109, and modules under IEC 61215 and IEC 61730. A quotation that names make and model allows this to be checked in an afternoon. A quotation that says "premium European inverter" does not.

Who holds the protection settings. Grid protection parameters are configured at commissioning and can be reset by a firmware update. If the as-configured settings were never recorded, restoring them means a return visit and a re-commissioning exercise.

Whether the contractor is registered. The fixed wiring certificate has to be issued by a registered electrical contractor, and engineering sign-off where it applies rests with a professional registered with the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber. Certified electrical contractors are listed here across the five districts, and the registration is the thing to check.

Whether the grant sequence has been respected. The residential support scheme runs to up to EUR 1,500 toward grid-connected PV on a primary residence and is applied for before installation begins. Work already under way sits outside it. This is the one step in the whole sequence that cannot be recovered afterwards.

Whose name the monitoring portal is in. Accounts registered to the installer's own email address are the most common handover defect, and transferring one later depends on a company that may no longer be trading.

Common questions

Is the connection application the same thing as a building permit?

No. The connection application concerns the electrical relationship between the installation and the distribution network. Planning and building permissions concern the structure, and they engage on their own terms — ground-mounted arrays, new roof structures and works to protected buildings are treated differently from modules on an existing pitched roof. The installer should state in writing, before contract, which applications apply to the specific property.

Can a system be installed without net metering?

The physical installation and the commercial arrangement are separable questions. The metering framework sits with the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority and determines what happens to exported units; the connection requirements sit with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus and determine what is allowed to connect at all. A system configured with a zero-export limit is still a generating installation and still needs the connection arrangement.

Does adding a battery to an approved system need a new application?

Any change to the point of connection, the inverter or the export arrangement re-engages the process. A DC-coupled retrofit that replaces the inverter clearly does; an AC-coupled battery inverter added alongside an existing string inverter is still a new generating device on the same connection. The safe planning assumption is that the application is engaged again.

Who is liable if the installation fails inspection?

The registered electrical contractor who carried out and certified the fixed wiring is the party who issued the certificate. Where the contract makes the installer responsible for the connection application, remediation of a failed inspection sits with them as well. Where it does not, the owner ends up coordinating between two companies who each describe the problem as the other's. This is the practical reason to name the submitting party in the contract.

Does this site rank installers on how fast their applications clear?

No. Companies are listed with registrations, coverage and stated capability. Application throughput is not a published figure anywhere, and any ordering built on it would be invented rather than observed.
