Decide what the measurement must establish
A harmonic measurement at a commercial connection can support several different decisions: investigating equipment disturbance, establishing conditions before a PV extension, assessing an agreed connection requirement, or checking whether mitigation changed the result. These are not interchangeable assignments. Define the decision before hiring an analyser or requesting a compliance certificate, because the purpose determines the measurement location, operating coverage and assessment method.
For a Cyprus facility, the engineering brief should identify the actual supply arrangement and the requirements applicable to that connection. Do not adopt a percentage from an overseas article as the site's legal limit. Ask the responsible engineer to name the assessment document, edition, relevant quantities, statistical treatment and boundary. Where the purpose is troubleshooting rather than formal acceptance, say so explicitly. A useful diagnostic investigation may identify the next test without yet supporting a compliance conclusion.
Fix the boundary and preserve the electrical context
Mark the agreed connection measurement point on the single-line diagram. Distinguish it from an inverter feeder, an internal distribution board and the location of the commercial meter. Measurements at those positions answer different questions because different loads, transformers and generators lie between them. An inverter-feeder result should not be presented as the complete installation's connection-point result.
Fluke's harmonic guidance recommends examining voltage and current distortion at the relevant coupling point and using recordings where operating conditions vary. It also describes measurements nearer suspected loads as a diagnostic technique. The practical implication is to separate the primary assessment location from supplementary source-investigation locations. Preserve transformer details, operating generators, capacitor-bank status and significant load changes with the records so later reviewers understand which system was measured. Require quantities and settings behind every percentage
A report headed THD is incomplete unless it identifies voltage or current, the calculation convention, included harmonic orders and the relevant phase. Retain individual harmonic magnitudes as well as the aggregate. Also retain the fundamental current or voltage used in the calculation. A percentage can change because its denominator changes, even when the absolute harmonic component does not.
Instrument configuration matters. Hioki's PW4001 specifications distinguish THD-F from THD-R, offer selectable harmonic calculation orders and grouping, and describe an optional IEC-compliant measurement mode. Those details show why two instruments displaying THD may not be producing directly comparable figures. They do not establish that this particular analyser is necessary for every assignment. Ask the measurement contractor to explain why the chosen instrument, sensors, ranges, settings and recording method are suitable for the stated assessment. Hioki PW4001 measurement specifications.
Capture operating states that could change the conclusion
Agree a recording programme around the facility's operation. Potentially informative states include normal production, low site demand, substantial PV generation, changing inverter output and operation of major nonlinear loads. A hotel laundry, refrigeration plant or workshop may have distinctive schedules, but the actual operating log should establish those schedules. The sector name is not evidence that a representative condition occurred.
Synchronise the measurement timeline with plant events. Request inverter output, relevant load states and switching records at a resolution appropriate to the investigation. The existing interval-load guide helps organise consumption records, although ordinary energy intervals cannot replace the harmonic analyser's measurements. Where the assessment requires a specified duration or aggregation method, follow that basis. Where it does not, the engineer should justify the selected coverage and identify important states that were absent.
A hypothetical percentage that points the wrong way
Suppose a simplified hypothetical current waveform contains 10 A of fundamental current and 1 A of combined harmonic current. Its THD-F is 10%. In a second state, the fundamental rises to 100 A while the combined harmonic current becomes 2 A, producing THD-F of 2%. The smaller percentage accompanies the larger absolute harmonic current. These arithmetic examples illustrate the denominator effect; neither is a compliance assessment.
The operator should therefore ask what changed in amperes, voltage distortion and operating conditions, rather than concluding that the second state necessarily imposes less harmonic burden. If total demand distortion is part of the agreed assessment, its demand reference must also be documented. A contractor should not substitute a convenient instantaneous current value for that reference. Keep the calculation definitions with the exported results so the interpretation can be checked without relying on a screenshot or a coloured dashboard indicator.
Investigate attribution before specifying mitigation
A correlation between daylight and distortion does not, on its own, prove that PV is the source. Production equipment, cooling demand and other operating conditions can also vary with daylight. Equally, an inverter's product documentation does not establish that the complete facility satisfies its connection requirements. The investigation must bridge the difference between equipment characteristics and the measured installation.
The engineer may propose coordinated measurements or controlled changes to operating states, subject to site permissions and a safe method. Record what remained constant and what changed. If the evidence cannot distinguish incoming voltage distortion from effects associated with internal equipment, that uncertainty should shape the next investigation. Avoid purchasing a filter solely from a headline THD value. A mitigation proposal needs an engineering explanation of the problem it addresses, its interaction with the installation and the evidence that will demonstrate success.
Run a follow-up meeting with decisions and owners
Use the follow-up meeting to close specific uncertainties. The facilities manager owns the operating calendar and identifies whether the recording covered representative production. The measurement contractor owns instrument configuration, sensor information and the raw-data export. The electrical engineer owns the assessment boundary, applicable criteria and technical interpretation. The PV specialist supplies inverter operating information and resolves equipment-specific questions. Name the individuals in the project record.
Each open point should end with a decision and a deliverable. For example, an unexplained overnight result may require verification of the load log before another measurement campaign. A missing calculation setting may require a corrected report rather than site attendance. A proposed filter may require further design assessment before procurement. Give each action an agreed completion date and state which decision remains on hold. This prevents a recurring meeting from becoming a discussion of the same unexplained graph.
Close the investigation with reproducible evidence
The final package should contain the marked boundary, recording dates, operating coverage, equipment and sensor details, configuration, relevant raw records, calculations and interpretation. Separate observed results from suspected causes. If mitigation is installed, compare the before-and-after evidence using compatible methods and explain any difference in site operation. A changed result during a quieter production week may not demonstrate the proposed technical effect.
Keep financial modelling separate from power-quality conclusions. The export and curtailment guide addresses energy and commercial constraints, which cannot substitute for harmonic assessment. For a PV-related investigation or extension, submit the measurement and follow-up scope through Solar Panels Cyprus and ask for a suitably qualified specialist. The comparison should identify who measures, who interprets, and who accepts the engineering findings, rather than offering an undefined power-quality check.
Frequently asked questions
Is an inverter's harmonic specification enough for the whole site?
No. It describes equipment under its stated conditions. A connection assessment must consider the actual installation, other equipment and the applicable measurement boundary.
Why retain harmonic amperes when the report already gives percentages?
Percentages depend on their reference quantity. Absolute magnitudes and the fundamental value help distinguish a changed harmonic component from a changed denominator.
Can a short spot reading establish compliance?
Only if the applicable assessment method permits that coverage and the required conditions are met. Otherwise it is a limited observation, potentially useful for diagnosis.
Who should decide whether a filter is needed?
The responsible electrical engineer should assess the evidence and proposed mitigation, with equipment specialists supplying relevant data. A headline THD reading alone is an inadequate design basis.
Discuss the measurement boundary and technical follow-up scope with a qualified solar specialist.
