How long an EAC grid connection takes in Cyprus
An EAC connection application runs to around 45 days on a clean submission. The stages, what extends them, and where the real delay in the programme sits.

Around 45 days is the typical duration of an EAC connection application in the Republic of Cyprus, measured from a complete submission on an unconstrained feeder to the point where the Electricity Authority of Cyprus is prepared to connect. That figure describes one stage of a programme that usually runs to several months end to end, and the stage it describes is rarely the one that causes the delay. The physical installation is measured in days. Everything either side of it — establishing consent, submitting a clean application, waiting on a load assessment, changing the meter — is measured in weeks.
The variable a client can actually control is not the authority's queue. It is whether the submission is right the first time.
Typical duration
Five stages, each with a different bottleneck.
Stage one: establishing what the property already has. The supply capacity, and whether it is 230 V single-phase or 400 V three-phase at 50 Hz, determines inverter selection, whether export needs phase balancing, and whether a supply upgrade is on the critical path. It is printed on the supply agreement and confirmed in a phone call. Days, if anyone thinks to do it. Weeks, if the question surfaces after a quotation has been signed.
Stage two: consent to use the roof. On a freestanding house this is the title position. On an apartment block it is written consent from the management committee for the roof, the common areas and the DC cable route. Strovolos and the surrounding Nicosia suburbs are full of 1970s to 1990s blocks where the riser is shared, the roof is common property and the committee meets when it meets. This is consistently the item started last and finished slowest.
Stage three: the application itself. Normally submitted by the installer on the owner's behalf, before commissioning rather than after. Around 45 days is the typical duration for a photovoltaic connection on a feeder with headroom.
Stage four: assessment, where it applies. Where local network capacity is constrained, the authority assesses the aggregate rather than the individual system, and the timetable extends by an unpredictable amount. The dense tourist-area connections around Germasogeia are the standard example on the south coast. Agricultural connections on the Nicosia plain behave differently again, with long service runs and pumping loads dominating the profile.
Stage five: metering and commissioning. Net metering requires a meter that records import and export separately, so the meter change is part of the connection process rather than an afterthought. Until it is done, the system is not commissioned, whatever the inverter display shows.
What extends it
An incomplete first submission. By a wide margin the most common cause. A file missing a signature, an ownership document, a consent or an equipment datasheet is not refused — it is queried, and it sits until the query is answered. Two rounds of that add more elapsed time than any other single factor in the programme, and none of it is the result of a decision anyone took.
A design change after submission. A different inverter model, a changed array size, a moved point of connection: any of these alter what was assessed. Design discipline after the file goes in is the single largest lever on the programme.
A constrained feeder. Contractors who work a district every week know which feeders attract a load assessment. A company quoting outside its normal area often does not, and its programme reflects that rather than any bad faith.
A supply upgrade. Moving a property from single-phase to three-phase is a separate works item with its own timetable and its own cost, and it is rarely the economic answer when the only reason is to fit a larger array.
Unnamed equipment. Generating plant connected to a low-voltage distribution network is assessed against EN 50549-1, with inverter safety under IEC 62109 and modules under IEC 61215 and IEC 61730. A quotation naming make and model can be checked against those in an afternoon. One that says "premium European inverter" cannot.
Grant sequencing. The residential support scheme runs to up to EUR 1,500 toward a grid-connected system on a primary residence and is applied for before installation begins. Work already under way sits outside it. This is the one step in the sequence that cannot be recovered afterwards.
Lead times on materials
Nothing about the connection process depends on materials, but the programme does, and the two are usually confused in the same conversation.
Modules, mounting rail and standard string inverters for common residential sizes are generally held on the island. Hybrid inverters, three-phase units above domestic ratings and anything tied to a particular battery architecture are frequently ordered in, and the determinant is the importer's stock position and the next container rather than the manufacturer's factory. A model held locally and a model ordered from Europe can sit weeks apart on the same quotation, and the quotation rarely says which is which. Asking in writing whether the named equipment is in stock in Cyprus is the cheapest question in the process.
Two items have lead times set outside the contract entirely. The meter is supplied and fitted by the authority as part of the connection, and where a supply upgrade is needed the connection works are the authority's too, priced per property rather than from any table.
Access constrains delivery more than most people expect. On the hillside plots around Peyia, steep access roads limit crane and delivery vehicle size, so what arrives in one lorry elsewhere arrives in stages. Scaffolding, where a pitched roof needs it, is charged on hire duration at roughly EUR 4 to 13 per square metre per week, which makes an idle scaffold a metered cost and is the clearest argument for not erecting it until the equipment is on site.
Sequencing with other trades
The connection application is the long pole, so it should be started first and everything else fitted around it.
Electrical first among the trades. The consumer unit, the earthing arrangement and the cable route to the proposed inverter position decide whether the installation is straightforward. Certified electrical labour runs to roughly EUR 32 to 65 per hour before materials, and an hour spent surveying the existing board before contract is worth more than a day improvising around it afterwards. This site lists certified electrical contractors by district, and registration is the item to check.
Roofing before mounting. Fixing an array to a covering with a few years left in it means paying twice, once to remove the array and once to refit it. Where a roof needs waterproofing or tile work, that work comes first.
Inverter siting settled early. Inverters derate in heat, and Nicosia has the widest temperature range on the island. An unventilated west-facing store is the worst room in the building for power electronics. On directly exposed coastal sites, Kato Paphos being the reference case, salt-laden air argues for a properly rated enclosure and galvanised or marine-grade fixings.
Season, on tourist stock. Accommodation in Ayia Napa and along the eastern coast is predominantly seasonal, and refurbishment is concentrated in November to March. An application lodged in February for work planned in April leaves no recovery time if a load assessment is triggered. Lodging it in the autumn, before the works window opens, is the difference between a system running for the season and a system waiting for it.
Installed grid-tied residential work sits at roughly EUR 900 to 1,300 per kWp, supply and install, before any connection charges. Those charges are quoted per property.
Common questions
Can the application be submitted before the equipment is chosen?
Not usefully. The assessment is made against a specific inverter and array configuration, so placeholder equipment invites a query rather than a decision. Fix the selection, lodge the application, then hold the design still until the connection arrangement is agreed.
Does the 45-day figure include the meter change?
It describes the application. The metering arrangement follows approval, and on a property where the existing meter position also has to move, that is a separate visit with its own scheduling. Programmes that treat approval as the finish line consistently run over by the length of this step.
Is a building permit needed as well?
The connection application concerns the electrical relationship between the installation and the distribution network. Planning and building permissions concern the structure, and they engage on their own terms: ground-mounted arrays, new roof structures and works to protected buildings are treated differently from modules on an existing pitched roof. The installer should state in writing which applications apply to the specific property.
What happens if the system is energised while the application is open?
That is an unapproved connection rather than a paperwork shortcut. Unwinding one costs more than waiting, and it puts the installer's certification and the grant position in question at the same time.
